Le Origini del Palio di Pescia
Tra alterne vicende, questa tradizione equestre andò avanti fino al 1526, allorquando, sia per il mutare delle mode, sia per problemi legati alla sicurezza dei cittadini, cessò definitivamente.
Al suo posto, anche se in forma non ufficiale, fu preferita la Giostra del Saracino, alla quale, naturalmente, partecipavano solo i giovani rappresentanti delle famiglie nobili locali.
Visto il successo, nel 1596 fu deciso dal Comune di far effettuare questa gara ogni anno in occasione dei festeggiamenti per la Santa patrona e così, anche se un po´ a singhiozzo, si andò avanti fino al 1677, anno in cui, per mancanza di concorrenti, la giostra finì.
In epoche più vicine a noi furono diversi i tentativi per dare nuova vita alla tradizione, ma ormai era troppo tardi.
Nel 1978, con l´intento di far rivivere il nobile passato di Pescia, un apposito comitato decise di riproporre la manifestazione paliesca, ma, in considerazione del mutar dei tempi, alle aste e ai cavalli, si preferì l´uso di archi e frecce.
A gareggiare sarebbero stati i rappresentanti dei quattro rioni di Ferraia, San Francesco, San Michele e Santa Maria, quartieri di cui si trova menzione negli statuti comunali fin dal 1340.
History: The origins of the Palio di Pescia
The passage under the Florentine aegis, which took place on 6 February 1339, led the Pescia authorities to elect, as protector of the city, Santa Dorotea, that the liturgical calendar recalled that very day.
In honor of the saint, since the following year solemn religious celebrations were held and some popular festivals were organized, of which the Palio dei Berberi (called Bravìo) was the most spectacular.
Among other events, this equestrian tradition continued until 1526, when, both for the change of fashions and for problems related to the safety of citizens, it finally ceased.
In its place, albeit in an unofficial form, the Giostra del Saracino was preferred, to which, naturally, only the young representatives of the local noble families participated.
Given the success, in 1596 it was decided by the Municipality to have this race run every year on the occasion of the celebrations for the patron saint and so, even if a bit of a sob, it went on until 1677, when, for lack of competitors, the carousel ended.
At times closer to us there were several attempts to revitalize the tradition, but it was too late.
In 1978, with the intention of reviving the noble past of Pescia, a special committee decided to revive the paliesca manifestation, but, in consideration of changing times, to the auctions and horses, the use of bows and arrows was preferred. .
To compete would be the representatives of the four districts of Ferraia, San Francesco, San Michele and Santa Maria, neighborhoods mentioned in municipal statutes since 1340.
