We continue our journey outside Pescia, in Valleriana (Svizzera Pesciatina) and from Pietrabuona we go to Medicina, one of the ancient villages nicknamed “10 Castella” (that means ten castles).
MEDICINA, THE CASTLE OF THE “SVIZZERA PESCIATINA” WITH THE “POPE’S OIL MILL”. MAYBE FROM THE 1400’s. ANCIENT CHURCH, SURVIVES A DOOR OF THE WALLED VILLAGE, REMAINS OF WALLS WITH ALSO THE REMAINS OF A … HOUSES INCORPORATED.
It deserves a visit always, in particular you should not miss the opportunity of some initiative of the local club Circolo Arci “Amici di Medicina”, which makes the tourist find some more service and … a few more open doors.
Exceptional, for example, is the Pope’s Oil Mill, private property, which could even date back to 1400, where he would have slept in 1530 Francesco Ferrucci with his officers, before reaching Gavinana and find the death “Vile man, you kill a dead man!). The oil mill would have worked no later than 1915. Publio Biagini also supports it and, with “Mulini e Frantoi a nord di Pescia” (Mills and Oil Mills North of Pescia), in 2010 he published an interesting book-catalogue on the many factories that have disappeared, have been reduced to ruins or, fortunately, are still in existence (still, such as the one in Medicina or even still in operation). I present the cover photo of the book which, as you can see, is not by chance dedicated to the “Frantoio del Papa” of Medicina and its particular gears, also the subject of a similar photo of me.
The photos show the solid and ancient bell tower of the Church of Saints Martin and Sixtus. The church is very old but has undergone many restorations in more times. The “Madonna with Child” in the photo is located inside the building. The streets of the castle-village offer valuable views, as you can see here in two photos, one of which is dedicated to a very beautiful portal of a private house.
